Ukishima Sculpture Studio is pleased to announce the opening of an important unique exhibition, "REC 3.11～ Post 3.11. What Can Art Do?” exhibition. This time, we have invited Jennifer Clarke, who is a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Aberdeen. Her work straddles the disciplines of anthropology and art. from Scotland, as well as the local based international artists; Kate Thomson, UK, and Hironori Katagiri to the exhibition.

"Both artists and scientists face the challenge of representing their knowledge in visual form. In the context of the triple disaster in Tohoku, what role can artists and academics play, responding to people’s diverse understandings and experience of radiation and its effects and affects on other matter, and matters? We are interested in the role of art in the service of community, and providing alternative stories, that counter the ‘mainstream’ narratives that governments and the media tell. How might converging modes of knowledge production in art and art-anthropology figure these things?

Jennifer’s work is part of a research group “Knowing from the Inside: art, architecture and design”. The premise of the project is that knowledge grows from practical and observational engagement with beings and things around us, from thinking with, from and through beings and things, not just about them. Our aim is to show how research underpinned by this premise could make a difference to the sustainability of environmental relations and to the well-being that depends on it.

It is also an exploration of ethics, in terms of both the personal and political responsibilities involved in doing research in this context. This is about ways of knowing and imagining the world as existential commitments to the world, and exploring, through art practice, ways to be ethically committed to learning from and living through others and other conceptual realities. This means investigating the effective and affective possibilities for art and art–anthropology as an emotive, transformative and unpredictable experience. " (Jennifer Clarke)
